Beaches in Zeeland

The beaches of Zeeland are without a doubt the biggest attraction of the province. As soon as the sun starts to shine there are large traffic jams on the roads to the coastal regions and the beaches are crowded with sun worshippers. On busy days the small roads in the vicinity of the beaches may get filled with cars causing congestion. On sunny days we advise you to either leave for the beach early in the morning or later on the day. During the summer you will have to pay a parking fee on almost every parking lot near the beach. Traffic wardens are very strict! The UV-index figures in Zeeland are not as high as in South European countries. However, we do advise you to apply sunscreen. Cadzand

The beaches of Cadzand stretch from het Zwin near the Belgian border to Nieuwvliet-Bad. In total the beaches consist of about 11 kilometers of the coast of Dutch Flanders. Just like many beaches in Zeeland the beaches in the vicinity of Cadzand have been awarded the European eco label, the blue flag. Several beach pavilions and a first aid post can be found here. Several hotels can be found in the dunes and on the dikes. From your room you have a beautiful view of the North Sea. In the vicinity of Cadzand several beaches can be found where nude recreation is tolerated. However, there are no official nudist beaches here. In het Zwin there are also a few areas where nude recreation is tolerated.

The Cadzand kite festival is held every year on the beaches of Cadzand. This colorful festival can be visited free of charge. The beaches of Cadzand are known for the shark teeth that are found there. Just after a storm or a turbulent sea you have a fairly big chance of finding a centuries-old shark tooth in the vicinity of het Zwin.

Zoutelande

The beach of Zoutelande is 5 kilometers long and is also known as the Zuiderstrand (South Beach). Just like most beaches in this part of Zeeland the beaches here have been awarded the Blue Flag. This is an eco label for the cleanest beaches in Europe. The beach of Zoutelande won the prize for cleanest beach in the Netherlands several times. Several beach tents can be found here. In several places you can rent a beach chair, parasol or windscreen. A rescue squad is present on the beach as well as a first aid post. Typical beach houses for this region are situated on the beach. These houses can be rented and are used to store things. However, as opposed to the houses at Breezand these houses are not suitable to spend the night in. There are no possibilities for nude recreation here. However, this is tolerated in the vicinity of Domburg and Vrouwenpolder. Just like in most places along the coast there is a parking fee here. During spring and fall the beaches near Zoutelande are very popular among kite surfers and motorized paragliders.

Nieuwvliet

The beaches in the vicinity of Nieuwvliet are known to be very suitable for children. When the tide is out the beach is very wide and several pools are left behind where the little ones can enjoy themselves. Because these shallow pools warm up more quickly the temperature of the water is a few degrees higher than that of the North Sea. The beaches of Nieuwvliet have been awarded the eco label the Blue Flag several times. On the beaches of Nieuwvliet several beach pavilions can be found as well as a watch tower for the rescue brigade which also has a first aid post. Several places can be found here where you can rent a parasol, beach chair or a windscreen. Nudist beaches can be found to the north in the vicinity of Groede. Dogs are allowed here all year round. However, from 1 May till 1 October they should be kept on a leash between 10am and 6pm. In the vicinity of Nieuwvliet Bad there are enough parking places. You will have to pay a fee for most of them. If you visit the beaches outside the high season parking is often free.

Breskens/Groede

The beaches of Breskens stretch from the ferry port of the village to Nieuwvliet Bad. Along the beach there is a panorama road, this is one of the few places in the Netherlands where you can drive along the coast on the seaside. Along the way you pass the lighthouse of Breskens which is the oldest lighthouse in the Netherlands made of cast iron. Several parking lots can be found here as well. These are ideal for disabled people who like to go to the beach. The beaches of Breskens have been awarded the eco label the Blue Flag. The beach pavilion ‘Puur’ in the vicinity of Groede was voted the best pavilion in Zeeland. Between post 20 and post 23 a popular nudist beach is situated. This beach mainly attracts Belgian tourists. On the beach a beach pavilion is situated where nude recreation is tolerated. In the vicinity of the beaches of Breskens there are enough parking places. If you are in luck you may even find a parking place free of charge. However, in most cases you will have to pay a parking fee. Parking fees may be by the hour or per day.

Vlissingen

One of the most important attractions of Vlissingen are its beaches. The most famous beach of Vlissingen is the Badstrand (strand is Dutch for beach) which is also known as the Boulevardstrand. Somewhat further to the north the Nollestrand, Duinstrand and Westduin are situated. A lifeguard is present on the beaches as well as a first aid post. Even further to the north the Ritthemse strand and the Kalootstrand are situated. However, these beaches only have few facilities. It is very nice to watch the ships sail by from the beaches of Vlissingen. Just like other beaches in Zeeland the beaches of Vlissingen have been awarded the eco label, the Blue Flag. On the Nollebeach you can find Slaapstrandhuisjes. You can spend the night in one of these houses. A very special way to spend the night on the beach of Dutch Flanders. In the vicinity of the beaches of Vlissingen enough parking places can be found. However, during the summer the parking places of the Badstrand may be full. If you want to enjoy this beach you’d best park your car in the center of Vlissingen. the parking place near the cinema is the closest to the boulevard.

Westkapelle

The beach of Westkapelle is the most southerly situated beach in the Netherlands. This sandy beach is almost three kilometers long and is also known as the Riviera of Dutch Flanders. The Zeeland province is known for the fact that it gets the highest amount of hours of sunshine; Westkapelle gets the most hours of sunshine in Zeeland. Just like other beaches in Zeeland the beach of Westkapelle has been awarded the eco label, the Blue Flag. Several beach tents and rental companies can be found here. You can rent a small house on the beach. These houses are meant for storage and are not suitable to spend the night in. At the first aid post special beach wheelchairs can be obtained. As opposed to most seaside resorts in Zeeland you can park your car here free of charge. Enough parking spaces can be found here; only during the busiest days of the year the parking lots may all be full. There are no nudist beaches in Westkapelle. However, nudist beaches can be found in Domburg and Vrouwenpolder.

Domburg

Ever since the 19th century the beaches of Domburg have been an important tourist attraction. The beaches of Domburg have been awarded the eco label, the Blue Flag countless times. The beaches were also voted the cleanest beach in the Netherlands several times. There are many facilities on the beach. Showers, toilets and a first aid post are among them. You can also find several beach pavilions and beach houses here. The beaches of Domburg are known for their typical posts and beach houses. These houses are for rent and are suitable to spend the night in. During high season dogs are allowed. However, they have to be on a leash between 10am and 7pm. Between posts 16.4 and 16.9 a nudist beach can be found. This is well-signposted. Enough parking place can be found here. Only during the busiest days of the year you may want to arrive early in order to find a good spot.

Vrouwenpolder

The beaches of Vrouwenpolder are among the widest in the Netherlands. Most beaches are situated on the North Sea. However, if you prefer fresh water to salt water you can also spend your day on the beach of the Veerse Meer (Lake). With the exception of the beach of the Veerse Meer dogs are allowed all year round when kept on a leash. The beach of Vrouwenpoler offers the unique opportunity to spend the night on the beach. During the summer you can spend the night in one of the beach houses near Breezand. These houses have a small kitchen and a bathroom. Several beach pavilions and rental companies can be found on the beaches of Vrouwenpolder. The beaches here are guarded by the coast guard. Enough parking places can be found here. However, the small roads may congest causing traffic jams. Two nudist beaches can be found in the vicinity of Vrouwenpolder. One in the vicinity of Oostkapelle between posts 8.6 and 10.9 and on in the vicinity of Breezand at dune crossing 72.

Burgh Haamstede

The beaches of Burgh Haamstede consist of almost the entire western part of Schouwen Duiveland. In the north they border the beaches of Renesse. The beaches of Burgh Haamstede are among the most beautiful and most peaceful in Zeeland. These beaches have been awarded the eco label, the Blue Flag several times. The beaches have also won the Quality Coast Award several times. Enough parking places can be found in the vicinity of Burgh Haamstede. However, during the busiest days of the year the parking places may all be full. The largest forest in Zeeland is situated in the Meeuwenduinen, which is a dune area. During the warmest days of the year this forest offers some cooling after a long day in the sun. Several beach pavilions and rental companies can be found here. Several beaches offer a fantastic view on the Oosterscheldekering (storm surge barrier). Nude recreation is tolerated between posts 12.5 and 14.0. this is signposted.

Renesse

The beaches of Renesse are among the most beautiful and most popular of the Netherlands. 17 kilometers of sandy beaches can be found here which has been awarded the Blue Flag. This is an eco label for the cleanest beaches in Europe. During the high season a life guard is present on the beaches as well as a first aid post. This season is from 15 May till 15 September. During the high season between 10am and 7pm dogs are only allowed when kept on a leash. During the rest of the year they may run freely all day long. Several parking lots can be found in the vicinity of Renesse. Just outside Renesse a big parking lot is situated from where you can take the bus to the beach. Several companies are situated on the beach where you can rent a parasol, long chair or windscreen. Several beach pavilions can be found here as well. There is a nudist beach between posts 6.94 and 7.99.

The beach during the winter

The beaches in Zeeland are not only a pleasant place to be during the summer. You can go for beautiful walks, practice a sport, use the beach as a place to exercise or go fishing all year round. Can you imagine anything more pleasant than spend your day on the beach during a sunny but cold winter’s day and have a bowl of fresh pea soup or a cup of hot chocolate with whipped cream afterwards?
